Laser Scar Removal

The Effects of Scarring

Weather scar removal may be something you need, let’s face it… during our lifetime we are going to obtain at least one scar on our body, this may be caused by deep cuts, wounds and acne.

Generally, when the skin is damaged the body forms new collagen fibres (a naturally occurring protein in the body) to mend the damage, resulting in a scar. The new scar tissue will have a different texture and quality than the surrounding tissue. Scars form after a wound is completely healed.

Types of Scars

It is of crucial importance to classify scars properly as variations in clinical scar characteristics determine the type of laser scar removal protocol. Colour, texture, and morphology of the scar, as well as previously used treatments, will influence the laser parameters and a number of treatment sessions required for best results.

The Scars We Most Commonly See:

  • Hypertrophic scars: these are firm, elevated & erythematous scars which as a result of excess collagen develop into this form. This type of scar may be visible around the boundaries of integument injury and may lightly fade over time.

  • Keloid scars: These scars are known to be firmer than the above hypertrophic scar. They are more commonly seen in individuals with darker skin tone.  Seen as having reddish-purple and a raised appearance Keloids show an extended phase leading to the development of thick hyalinized collagen bundles which can be seen in the Hypertrophic scar, but except don’t fade over time.

  • Atrophic scars: This type of scar is generally caused by acne which scarring results from injury to the deeper dermal layers of the skin and most commonly occur because of intense inflammation such as rupture of the pilosebaceous unit or oil glands.  This inflammation disrupts the evenly ordered structure of collagen which results in acne scarring. In other words, the skin is not able to repair itself after an individual has suffered from acne.

What’s Our Method to Scar Removal

The team at Laser Image Specialists have taken advantage of the development of laser technology and its breakthroughs for treating various scar and other skin conditions. Our team has been able to implement this into various treatments depending on the characters of the scar.

Types of scars, condition severity of scarring and skin type all determine the type of laser scar removal protocol that’s required.

Our lasers remove micron-thin layers of skin and unlike chemical peels and dermabrasion, this allows the physician to precisely control the depth at which skin is removed. This enables the treatment to be as mild or as aggressive as required.

The laser gently vaporizes the acne-scarred surface of the skin so that within days undamaged, young, healthy-looking skin can be formed.
